The BiologyWhat Telomeres Actually Are
Every cell in your body carries its genetic instructions on 46 chromosomes, and the very ends of those chromosomes are protected by repeating stretches of DNA called telomeres. Think of them like the plastic tips on shoelaces: they cap the ends so the important genetic material inside does not fray, stick to other chromosomes, or get misread. Telomeres do not code for anything themselves; their job is purely protective, which is exactly what makes them so important.
There is a catch built into biology. Each time a cell divides, the machinery that copies DNA cannot quite reach all the way to the very end of the strand, so a small piece of telomere is left uncopied and lost. Scientists call this the end-replication problem. Over many divisions the telomeres grow progressively shorter. Cells have a partial repair enzyme called telomerase that can add telomere sequence back, but in most adult human tissues its activity is low, so the net trend across a lifetime is gradual shortening.
When telomeres become critically short, the cell interprets this as a signal to stop dividing and enters a state called replicative senescence. This ceiling on cell divisions is known as the Hayflick limit. Senescent cells linger and behave differently than young cells. Telomere attrition is now recognized in the scientific literature as one of the classic hallmarks of aging, sitting alongside processes like genomic instability and mitochondrial change as a fundamental feature of how cells age over time.

Green Tea Early human
In human research, regular green tea intake has been associated with longer leukocyte telomere length, and a small randomized trial in women reported telomere lengthening with green tea supplementation, suggesting it may help support the body's natural maintenance of these protective caps.
Gotu Kola Early / preliminary
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial of a botanical formula that included Centella asiatica reported effects on telomere length in adults, and the geroprotective review discusses gotu kola's relationship to cellular senescence and telomere-linked aging.
Trans-Resveratrol Preclinical
In cell and vascular models, trans-resveratrol has been shown to increase telomerase (hTERT) activity and delay cellular senescence, actions that may help support the healthy maintenance of telomeres over time.
